Departure south from Sofia to Rila Mountain National park to visit the largest Bulgarian monastery –
Rila Monastery UNESCO site. Admire wooden balconies, azure fretwork, collonades, facades and
colourful frescoes, silhouetted against a fantastic panorama of mountain peaks. Altitude 1147 meters
above sea level. Founded in the 10th century. National Historical Reserve since 1976. UNESCO site
since 1983.
Free time for lunch and continue further south to Melnik museum town – the smallest town in
Bulgaria, located at the foothills of sandstone pyramids in which wine cellars were dug. Visit
Kordopulov house and taste some local wines. Back to Sofia in the early evening.
